Every year, Rushden Chichele Rotary Club sponsors a public speaking competition for the three TENC schools; The Ferrers School, Huxlow Science College and Rushden Academy, and every year the young people involved show a high degree of talent in the art of public speaking and persuasion. On July 8th the three schools met at Huxlow Science College for this year’s competition. Each team comprised three students: one to act as a chair person, one to be the main speaker and the third student proposed a vote of thanks to the speaker. This format is used every day in clubs and societies across the world and the competition encourages the students to learn and use the techniques involved. Speakers choose their own subjects. Topics this year included “Plastic pollution”, “Electric Vehicles” and “Women in STEM education”. The audience of teachers and students appreciated the high standard of the presentations and listened intently to well argued points being put forward clearly. The judges - three Rotarians with experience in public speaking - gave the winning vote to Moses Paul-King, Leo Wondzinski and Eva Waterfield from Rushden Academy who met the demands of the competition to the highest level in their chosen topic of electric cars. President of Rushden Chichele Rotary Club, Mick Hill, presented certificates to all taking part and for the winning team there was also a trophy and £20 each. The team will now go forward to the semi-final of the competition which will include teams from across Northamptonshire, Leicestershire and Lincolnshire.
