We came together as a group, supervised by Ms Raven, our Librarian, to take part in the Active Citizenship Award. We decided to look at making some improvements in the school and we thought of many ways to make the school better at being eco-friendly such as by getting recycling bins, alternatives to plastic, getting a reusable water bottle for everyone but finally decided to look at the issue of single use plastic.

After lots of research, we put together a report that we presented to our year group as an assembly which covered a wide variety of things including:

Þ Saving the oceans

Þ The culprits (countries)

Þ How plastic contributes to global warming

Þ How much money we could save

Þ Government policy

Þ Alternatives to plastic

Þ And what the school can do

Why did we do it?

We decided to do this project to make people more aware and more educated on single-use plastic. Single-use plastic is slowly destroying the planet and as a school we wanted to help inform people of this so they know how they can make a difference and not to contribute to the overload of plastic.

We also made posters which will be put in all the classrooms around the school and we did some research on how much eco-friendly, reusable bottles would cost with our school logo on (which we could possibly then sell at the student office and the canteen).

Whilst we were taking part in this project, Mrs Wiles, Head of Science, came up with another group to help reduce single use plastic. They are called eco ambassadors. Some of us have also become part of the eco ambassadors team and we will pass on the information that we have researched to the rest of the group (especially about the reusable bottles) and we will all contribute to abolishing plastic and helping recycling, looking for alternatives. The eco ambassadors will try and help our school forever.
