Students are able to choose dance as an option subject at year 9. By doing so, they receive 5 lessons a fortnight.

Lessons are structured so students build the necessary skills in performance, technique, choreography and composition in preparation for the GCSE syllabus and examination.

On the GCSE Dance course students will study:

  1. Performance
  2. Choreography
  3. Dance appreciation

Assessment is divided into 2 components:

Component 1: Performance and choreography

Performance

  • Set phrases through a solo performance (approximately one minute in duration)

  • Duet/trio performance (three minutes in a dance which is a maximum of five minutes in duration)

The performance element of the course is worth 40 marks and forms 30% of the GCSE. It is internally marked and externally moderated.

Choreography

Solo or group choreography – a solo (two to two and a half minutes) or a group dance for two to five dancers (three to three and a half minutes)

Component 2: Dance Appreciation

Students are assessed on their:

  • Knowledge and understanding of choreographic processes and performing skills

  • Critical appreciation of own work

    Critical appreciation of professional works

The assessment is in the form of a written exam which is worth 80 marks and forms 40% of the GCSE.

Throughout the two year course there will be numerous opportunities to take part in workshops and stage performances as well visit the theatre to appreciate a variety of dance works.
