You will start your GCSE course at the beginning of Year 9 and follow the Edexcel GCSE 2012 linear course specification 1MA01. Depending on your progress and ability you will study either the Higher or the Foundation course.  The Higher tier grades available range from 9-3 and at Foundation from 5-1. You will be assessed through two examination papers one of which is a calculator based paper.

You will study topics in three main areas: number and algebra, geometry and measures and statistics. It will build on many of the skills you learned in years 7 and 8. You will find that exam papers are asking questions that are more often based on real life situations and therefore you will have to apply your maths skills to these tasks. Worksheet homework tasks will be set every term to help you practise and improve these skills.

Supporting Your Child

Parents can encourage students to complete the weekly Mymaths homework tasks to the best of their ability.  Support sessions are offered in the maths department on a Monday and a Thursday after school for all pupils.

Mathswatch is a fabulous revision tool that supports work in lessons as well as revision.  Staff will refer to clip numbers in lessons and students can view these clips at home online.  Additionally, Mathswatch provides excellent revision worksheets with answers on the site which are linked to the appropriate video clips.

We would encourage all students to bring a scientific calculator to all maths lessons in addition to their usual equipment.

Parents can communicate with the maths department via the student planner or by phone with any comments or concerns.
