All students study French in Year 7.  Over the year they will explore the language in order to be able to express themselves confidently.  They will develop important literacy skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking through a series of communicative activities and grammar work.  High ability students can then study a second language, currently Spanish, in addition to French from Year 8.  We also look at the value of languages in the modern world and answer the question “Why do we have to do a language?”

Students are assessed formally 4 times a year in all four skills, and informally throughout the course, for example in weekly vocab tests or presentations.

Supporting your Child

Parents can help with your language learning in many ways:

  • Vocabulary tests – ask them to check your spelling. Do you know what the words mean?
  • Speaking tests – can they listen to you as you memorize and practice your role play or presentation?
  • Looking for a family holiday? Lots of our students have been to France, Germany or Spain because they are studying that language.

In French, we follow the “Studio” French course in KS3, which comes with interactive practise tasks, available as “ActiveLearn”.  Parents are able to purchase this as an online subscription to support homework.  Parents can also support students at home by helping memorise new vocabulary learnt in lessons, checking understanding, spellings and use in a sentence. Homework is logged on Edmodo which can be checked at home.

In Spanish, we follow the “Mira Express” course in KS3 and workbooks are available to support and consolidate learning at home. Parents can support students at home by helping memorise new vocabulary learnt in lessons, checking understanding, spellings and use in a sentence. Parents can also access Edmodo to check and support students in completion of their homework.

At KS4, “ActiveLearn is available in all languages to support classwork through interactive, online exercises. Parents are encouraged to check coursework deadlines on the academy website and encourage regular vocabulary practise and completion of homework tasks. CGP revision books can be purchased through us which give students extra help with all four skill areas.
